Apps 101: What is an “app”?

short for APPLICATION. A software program designed and written to fulfill a particular purpose. Usually, the term “app” refers to a mobile app for devices like the iPhone and iPad.

Each icon represents an app. When tapped, the app launches.

Apps are different than PC applications:

  • Apps start instantly and load right away.
  • Each app fills the whole screen when it is running.
  • Only one app runs at a time.
  • Apps are intuitive and easy to use.
  • To use an app, you just touch. There’s no mouse.
  • When a keyboard is required, it appears on screen.
  • Work is always automatically saved.
  • There’s no folder and file system to get lost in.
